It's Not Pretentious If There Is A Purpose
Paduan artist Maurizio Cattelan has always managed to make a strong impression since the beginning of his rise in the contemporary art system. Printed media and websites of every type to talk about him constantly. An emblematic case occurred on 6th May 2004, when the city of Milan woke up bewildered to one of his works installed in Piazza XXIV Maggio. Three plastic manikins, representing children hanging from the branch of a large oak tree, provoked a great emotional impact and a huge psychological stir.

Other impressive works are “Nona Ora”, which portrays Pope John Paul II in a white cloth crushed to the floor by a meteorite, or a kneeling baby Hitler.

you thought New York's huge sack of exotically plumed indie had been exhausted (animal collective/matt+kim/gang gang dance) 'Telepathe' allow a sigh of relief to escape my pursed lips. These two girls, dressed like a Klaxon practising black magic, have done it right.

GUMMO
I am such a huge fan of the works of Karmony Korine. He is best know for writing 'Kids' directed by Larry Clark, about an amoral, hiv-positive skateboarder sets out to 'deflower' as many virgins as possible while a local girl who contracted his disease tries to save his next target from her same fate. He also wrote 'Julien Donkey-Boy' about a dysfunctional family consisting of Julien a young man with untreated schizophrenia, his sister who is carrying his child, his brother and his domineering, german father. Without a doubt, i urge anyone to see either of these films. However this post is about his film 'Gummo'. I saw it for the first time three years ago and the impact it had on me is still as strong as ever.

CAGE (Chris Palko)
Chris Palko was born in Germany to American parents. He lived there until the age of four when his father, Bill Murray, was dishonorably discharged from the military police for selling and using heroin. The family was sent back to the US where they lived in New York. Murray would force Palko to pull homemade tourniquets (compressing device to control circulation to an extremity) and inject heroin.
When he was eight his father was arrested for threatening his family with a shotgun. Palko was kicked out of high school, beaten by his stepfather and began drinking heavily, smoking marijuana, using LSD and mescaline. He was sent to live with his uncle back in Germany where he continued to be beaten and was sent back to New York after a year.
He was arrested several times for drug possession and fighting in the streets. When he faced jail time for violating probation, his mother convinced the judge that he was mentally unstable, and he was sent to the Stoney Lodge psychiatric hospital for a two week evaluation. He eventually ended up staying in the hospital for eighteen months. After being misdiagnoses and placed on the untested drug 'fluoxetine' he became suicidal and made several attempts to kill himself including hanging himself with his shoelaces. He was illigally restrained over twently times for up to 13 hours by straightjacket.
When he was released at age 18 he started writing music under the name Cage. Its now over ten years later. I find his story absolutely captivating, I havn't had much time to get into his music but one song that caught my attention immediately is "I Never Knew You" a gritty tale of how curiosity can lead to obsession which can lead down a very grim path.

Many people will have seen Wareheim's work without realising, he has directed MGMT's 'The Youth' music video as well as various Major Lazer videos.
